From vegan to ovo-lacto and pesco-vegetarian, the number of people following plant-based eating patterns has increased around the world. What are the differences in categories of vegetarianism and how do they compare in terms of their impact on nutrient intakes, health and well being? This presentation will address key issues related to plant-based eating patterns and diet-related health across key life stages and chronic diseases including type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

About the speaker:
Professor Collins is an NHMRC Senior Research Fellow, Director of Research for the School of Health Sciences and Deputy Director, Priority Research Centre in Physical Activity and Nutrition, the University of Newcastle. She leads the largest team of research dietitians internationally in developing food and nutrition eHealth tools, programs and evaluating the impact on eating patterns and diet-related health across key life stages and chronic disease conditions. Professor Collins has published over 300 manuscripts and supervised 28 Higher Degree Research candidates to completion. She is a DAA Fellow and was awarded 2017 Hunter Medical Research Institute, Researcher of the Year.

Health at Every Size in Dietetic Practice
Health-focussed size acceptance approaches such as those underpinned by the Health at Every Size (HAES) principles are gaining traction in dietetics, particularly for assisting people with higher BMIs. This presentation will contextualise the HAES Principles in the Nutrition Care Process and evidence-based practice.

Fiona Willer is an Advanced Accredited Practising Dietitian who combines academic research, university lecturing and public speaking with creating professional development resources and training for health professionals through her business, Health Not Diets. Her research areas are dietetic private practice benchmarking, inter-professional learning and the integration of weight neutral lifestyle approaches (including Health at Every Size® and the Non-Diet Approach) into the practice of health professionals, particularly dietitians. Creator of the innovative Unpacking Weight Science professional development podcast, Fiona has great enthusiasm for both interrogating weight research and overusing food and eating metaphors in everyday life.
Insulin Resistance – A Clinical Update
Insulin resistance (IR) is an increasing common clinical condition requiring medical diagnosis and evidence based dietary management. Dietitians are well placed to play a central role in the identification, referral of and clinical management of IR to facilitate patient self management and prevent the development of Type 2. Susie Burrell is one of Australia’s leading dietitians with degrees in both nutrition and psychology. She is the resident nutritionist at Channel 7’s Sunrise, has a weekly radio segment on the 2GB Afternoon Program with Chris Smith and is regularly seen in print media commenting on all areas of weight loss and nutrition. She has written 3 books, including “Losing the last 5kg”, and has a nutrition practice in Sydney.

Jessica is also one of the Co-founders of nutrition consultancy business Health & Performance Collective, who help individuals, sports teams, food brands and corporates live and perform at their best.
