What does the science say about nuts and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk reduction? How do nuts fit into a healthy eating pattern? And how can dietitians help their patients eat more nuts? Join Associate Professor Yasmine Probst and Professor Catherine Itsiopoulos in this upcoming webinar to learn the latest on nuts. Yasmine will dive into the body of nutrition research on the effect of nuts on reducing CVD risk. Catherine will then outline what it means to eat a heart-healthy Mediterranean diet and share how dietitians can incorporate more Med diet principles into their practice.


About the speakers:


Professor Catherine Itsiopoulos (PhD, APD) is the incoming Dean of Health and Biomedical Sciences at RMIT University, and previously held senior academic roles as Pro Vice Chancellor of the College of Science Health Engineering and Education at Murdoch University and Head of School of Allied Health Human Services and Sport at La Trobe University. Catherine is an Accredited Practising Dietitian and Professor of Nutrition and Dietetics affiliated with the University of Melbourne, La Trobe University and Murdoch University (Western Australia). She is a recognised expert in Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, and has international standing as a leader in Mediterranean diet research. Catherine has spent her career examining whether the Mediterranean diet can prevent or treat a range of diseases. Catherine has authored about 100 scientific publications – presenting her research nationally and internationally – and has published three books, The Mediterranean Diet, The Mediterranean Diet Cookbook, and the Heart Health Guide.


Yasmine Probst is an Associate Professor with the School of Medicine at the University of Wollongong and Research Fellow at the Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute and Senior Research fellow with MS Australia. She holds dual Masters degrees in Dietetics and Health Informatics and is recognised as an Advanced Accredited Practising Dietitian with the Dietitians Association of Australia and a Fellow of the Australasian College of Health Informatics. Yasmine teaches a key research theory subject within the Nutrition and Dietetic programs at the University of Wollongong. As a person living with MS, her fellowship research and teaching focuses on nutrition for people living with MS.
