Malnutrition Symposium: 50 years of research, where are we now?

Join us for our 2024 Malnutrition Week ANZ Symposium as we commemorate five decades of malnutrition research and delve into cutting-edge strategies for enhancing patient care. Gain valuable insights from three leading dietitians as they discuss the progress made so far, the challenges that persist, and the innovative approaches that are shaping the future of malnutrition management.

In this symposium we’ll explore:

  • 50 years later, the skeleton is still in the hospital closet with Lina Breik
  • Insights from a state-wide malnutrition audit with Dr Adrienne Young & Aoife Elliott

Agenda:

50 years later, the skeleton is still in the hospital closet

Join Advanced Accredited Practising Dietitian, Lina Breik, as she explores the ongoing challenge of hospital malnutrition, a critical issue that remains prevalent nearly 50 years after it was first brought to light in the landmark 1974 article, “The Skeleton in the Hospital Closet”. Despite advancements in screening and diagnostic tools, malnutrition continues to undermine patient outcomes and increase healthcare costs. In this presentation, Lina will discuss the evolving focus on early identification and personalised nutrition therapy, highlighting the need to tailor nutritional care to each patient’s unique needs, preferences, and goals. Discover why a one-size-fits-all approach is ineffective when it comes to managing malnutrition and learn proactive strategies for improving patient care.

Lina Breik is an Advanced Accredited Practising Dietitian with over a decade of clinical nutrition experience. As the Founding Lead at Tube Dietitian, a community-based home enteral nutrition service in Australia, Lina actively advocates for the cause of malnutrition, with a particular focus on the home tube fed population. In 2020, she completed her Master of Public Health, and now she continues her commitment to research through a PhD that dives into the experiences and challenges of Australian adults living with a feeding tube. Lina is also the Vice Chair of the Nutrition Support Interest Group for Dietitians Australia and serves on various working groups for the Australasian Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition.

Insights from a state-wide malnutrition audit

During Malnutrition Week ANZ 2023, a state-wide malnutrition audit was conducted across more than 50 healthcare facilities in Queensland, including the state’s first-ever paediatric-focused audit. Dive into the results with Dr Adrienne Young and Aoife Elliott, two key dietitians behind the audit, as they explain key findings, share behind-the-scenes challenges, and offer powerful insights into the state of malnutrition in both adult and paediatric patients. Plus, discover how these findings will drive targeted improvements in malnutrition care across the state.

Dr Adrienne Young is an Advanced Accredited Practicing Dietitian at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Queensland. Her research to date has focused on improving nutrition care of older inpatients, including input into the design of the Eat Walk Engage delirium prevention program.

Aoife Elliott is the Acting Director for Dietetics & Food Services at Children’s Health Queensland. She has a special interest in inborn errors of metabolism, clinical redesign and leadership.
