About the Masterclass:

It often takes more than one professional to see the whole picture. In this Malnutrition Week ANZ Masterclass, geriatrician Dr Desmond Graham and researcher Associate Professor Sandra Iuliano bring two different perspectives to the same challenge: the real, often underrecognised link between cognitive decline, frailty and malnutrition. Desmond will discuss the early nutrition and cognitive-frailty links that make early identification so critical, while Sandra will focus on managing malnutrition and frailty as dementia progresses. Case studies and interactive discussion throughout will highlight how this is managed in different care settings, and how collaboration and upskilling across the multidisciplinary team leads to better outcomes. They’ll also share practical ways to work through real-world barriers like workforce pressures, high turnover and delayed access.

About the speakers:

Dr Desmond Graham is a geriatrician, healthy ageing specialist and Chief Medical Officer at Geriatric Care Australia. He is passionate about improving access to proactive, evidence-based care for older people, particularly in community and rural settings. Des is involved in clinical care, research, education and health system innovation, and regularly speaks nationally on healthy ageing, dementia, frailty and new models of aged care. He also hosts the Healthy Ageing Podcast.

Associate Professor Sandra Iuliano is a senior research fellow in the department of medicine, University of Melbourne. Her research focuses on the role of nutrition across the lifespan on musculoskeletal health. She has worked extensively with older adults with an emphasis on food-based approaches to prevent falls, fractures and malnutrition. Her work has results in the inclusion of nutrition in National Falls Prevention Guidelines, the Aged Care Quality Standards and the new Aged Care Act in Australia and FAO policies. She presented evidence at the Royal Commission in aged-care and is a member of the National Aged-care Advisory Council. She is a strong advocate for improving nutritional care and quality of life via improved food provision among older adults, especially those in aged care.

Supported by

Now in its sixth year supporting Malnutrition Week ANZ, Nutricia understands how much nutrition matters for those at risk of or living with malnutrition or early Alzheimer’s disease, and the difference it can make to their independence and quality of life. Alongside the Fortisip Compact range, Forticreme Complete and Souvenaid, Nutricia offers education, resources and guidance to help dietitians put the evidence into practice.
