I recently surveyed a group of private practice dietitians that I was mentoring about why they chose dietetics as a career. The response was unanimous: “to help people”. That’s why I chose dietetics as a career too! However, I learnt early on in my career in private practice, that you can’t help people if you don’t know how to run an efficient business. If you are a dietitian in private practice, you need to be more than a dietitian, you need to be a businesswoman (or man if you’re one of the few guys in dietetics!).
