Traffic Light Food Tracker is a free app that assists users sort through marketing hype and interpret nutrition information panels to make healthier food choices. The app uses a traffic light rating system based on the amount of total fat, saturated fat, sugars and sodium per 100g of the food product.
To use the app:
1. Select a food product and find the nutrition information panel.
Look for the 100g column. Enter the total fat, saturated fat, sugar and sodium content.
2. Read the traffic light rating for each nutrient – green indicates low, amber indicates medium and red indicates high. Limit the number of red lights in your shopping trolley and replace them with products with green lights.
3. Add food products to your ‘pantry’.
The Traffic Light Food Tracker was developed by the Obesity Policy Coalition (OPC), which is concerned about the impact of obesity in Australia. The OPC was established by the Cancer Council Victoria, Diabetes Australia – Victoria, VicHealth and the World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for obesity Prevention at Deakin University.
