Background

The purpose of this project is to investigate whether technology, specifically smartphone applications, could enhance the existing relationship between Accredited Practicing Dietitians (APDs) and their clients’ post-bariatric surgery (PBS). The advent of smartphone technology for connecting patients with their health care providers, offers an additional means of two-way communication which can include messaging, video calls, real-time updates, appointment reminders, nutrition monitoring and provision of targeted client information. Such methods of ‘patient-provider’ communication have potential to be used in a dietetic setting to improve initial post-surgical and long term health monitoring for clients’ PBS.

In the Australian context there is a lack of research into the usage of apps by bariatric patients and the type of information that they would find helpful. Equally the technology use and requirements of bariatric dietitians is unknown. This research could help us to find new ways to support patients after Weight Loss Surgery.

Objectives

·       Evaluate currently available apps for nutrition monitoring PBS.

·       Assess current usage and potential feasibility of using health apps by patients/clients PBS and APDs.

·       Determine expectations and current methods of two-way communication PBS by patients/clients PBS and APDs.

·       Determine requirements of nutrition apps post bariatric surgery by patients/clients PBS and APDs.
