What is Body Composition Analysis by Computed Tomography?
The combination of involuntary weight loss and and skeletal muscle depletion is a demostrated poor prognostic factor for patients with cancer, independent of Body Mass Index (BMI). Evaluation of tissue density data from computed tomography (CT) axial images at the third lumbar vertebra (L3) has emerged as the international gold standard of body composition analysis to define sarcopenia at the tissue level.
To build research capacity and support skill development in cancer clinician-researchers with an interest in CT-defined sarcopenia and its impact on cancer outcomes.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
The program will be of interest to a range of multi-disciplinary cancer clinician-researchers with an interest in sarcopenia, malnutrition, muscle metabolism, cancer cachexia or factors that impact outcomes including dose-limiting treatment toxicities.
- Understand the role of muscle status evaluation by CT in the assesment of malnutrician and sarcopenia.
- Undertake theoretical and practical education sessions in the application of CT in muscle status evalusation.
- Be able to demonstrate proficiency in the analysis and interpretation of muscle status evaluation using Alberta Protocol, the international gold standard.
