Research continues to emerge on the links between diet quality and mental health. Recently, Associate Professor Felice Jacka from Deakin University spoke at the MLA symposium “Putting nutrition into meals”. According to Jacka, there is some evidence that dietary fibre, zinc and iron may be important for mental health. Jacka, however, recommends a whole food approach based on the Australian Dietary Guidelines. Associate Professor Jacka also believes balance is important based on her analysis of red meat intake in women where those consuming more or less than amounts recommended (i.e. 65-100 g serves, 3 to 4 times per week) had higher levels of depression, anxiety or bipolar disorders than those eating recommended amounts.
